The Meteora monasteries

Pelion is an excellent base to visit one of the places that you must have seen: the Meteora – Monasteries.

From Volos it is about a 2 1/2 hours drive following a nice highway to the town Kalambaka, where the monasteries are situated. Driving through the typical Greek village Kastraki the road curves up the hills towards the monasteries that lay on top of the characteristic massive rocks. This road leads you to all monasteries and offers marvelous views.

The rocks with the monasteries are situated in a huge, specific countryside and have been the place for the prayer since the 11th century. Monks and eremites lived in the many caves of the rocks.

The monasteries were founded because many had the need to withdraw on a safe quiet place to strengthen their religion.

It is possible to visit the monasteries. It is prohibited to enter the monasteries in shorts and bare arms. Because most of the monasteries can be reached through a couple of hundred stairways, a comfortable pair of shoes is strongly recommended. And be sure not to forget your photo camera!
